Dr Stephen Holmes was born in New Orleans, but raised all over, including many years overseas, what one might call an “oil-brat”. After graduating from Washington and Lee University, he spent a few years exploring various career options, including some time in the oil business in Texas and Oklahoma. Finally deciding on dentistry as a career, he attended dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, then completed his Pediatric Dental Residency at LSU in New Orleans. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years after that, treating the children of active-duty troops in Japan and England. Although he loved his time in the USAF, he married a Louisiana girl towards the end of his active-duty career and moved back to the States to start a family.
He worked for a short while in Austin, then in Nashville, TN, before moving back to New Orleans, closer to family, to start his own practice. He ran a solo practice in New Orleans for 11 years, was part-time faculty at LSU School of Dentistry, on staff at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, and a member of the Craniofacial team at Children’s Hospital.
With his eldest son being on the autism spectrum, he and his wife, Shanee, became tired of fighting the school system in Louisiana, and decided to seek greener pastures. The Texas public school system has been a life saver. Dr Holmes, his wife, and two kids are a happy to have made the transition, just wish they had done so earlier.
After working for a larger group in the DFW area, Dr Holmes realized that he’s happiest in a smaller, private, clinical setting, and excited to be part of Dr Jeff’s team. Although ‘classically’ trained in pediatric dentistry, having his own children really changed his approach to dentistry. The first question he always asks himself is “what would i do if this were my child?”
Although most of his time off is spent centered on family activities, you might find Dr Holmes riding his dirt/motor bike around the area, always riding safely, and slowly.
